Why We Love Senger: Soft Toys Made to Be Loved for Life
When I started KEKA TOYS, I made myself a promise. I would only stock things I'd happily put in a kids’s hands, because we all know where everything ends up (yes, the mouth). Senger Naturwelt was one of the first brands that passed that test, and it's still one I'm proud to put on our shelves.
A German family of companions, since 1985
Senger has been making soft toys for four decades. Their philosophy is summed up in their own words: "Companions for life." Every toy is designed around trust, comfort and craftsmanship, using materials that protect both children and the planet.
What makes Senger different
GOTS certified. Senger follows the Global Organic Textile Standard, certified by CERES-CERT AG. It sets strict environmental criteria and fair working conditions, from sourcing natural fibres through to finishing and production. In practice, that means avoiding harmful chemicals and supporting responsible manufacturing.
Natural, toxin-free materials. Senger's promise is only natural, toxin-free and GOTS certified materials, for carefree contact with skin. Their floppy animals are made from organic cotton and pure sheep's wool. Most of their cuddly friends are filled with virgin sheep's wool from controlled organic animal husbandry, sourced from migratory shepherds in Germany's Eifel region. Fibres and fillings come from Germany or the EU.
Thoughtful dyeing. Their dyes are free from lead and other harmful substances, they don't use azo dyes, and they skip fabric softener and chlorine-based pre-bleaching.
Handmade, and made to last. Each toy is handmade, then cleaned, brushed and vacuumed with compressed air after every production step. They're built for many years of companionship, not one season.
Why I love it: a mum's view
As a mum, I know how attached little ones can get to one special soft toy. It goes to bed, to the shops, to the doctor, and it comes home a little more loved every time. I'm also endlessly curious about how children grow and feel, and that shapes how I choose what we stock.
Child development thinking calls these comfort toys "transitional objects": companions that help a child feel safe when a parent isn't right there, at bedtime, at daycare, or in an unfamiliar place. When a toy takes on that role, the details matter:
• Texture and softness. Young children learn about the world through touch. Natural plush and wool offer gentle, varied sensory input.
• Floppy, huggable limbs. Senger's floppy animals have long arms and legs that small hands can grip, drag and squeeze. They are made for cuddling, playing and exploring.
• Longevity. A toy that survives years of hugs and washes means the bond doesn't have to end because the toy fell apart.
• Open-ended play. A simple, quiet character gives children room to invent the story, from doctor's visits to big feelings they're still learning to name.
An honest note before you buy
Natural materials behave like natural materials. White plush can shed a little fluff at first, which is harmless and fades over time or vacuums away. Wool carries a light natural scent from lanolin, which fades but can return after washing. Fresh air helps.
To care for your Senger toy, brush off surface dirt, then hand wash in lukewarm water with a mild wool detergent. Don't rub, wring or spin it. Squeeze out the water and dry it flat on a towel.
